Introduction of New Energy Trends: From Carbon Capture to Hydrogen Economy (Synchronous Learning) (Completion)

KRISHNA RAMASWAMI

The link between global warming and rising anthropogenic Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere is now well recognized. The urgency to address this existential threat requires a multi pronged approach where carbon capture, concentration, sequestration and utilization, and establishing a sustainable hydrogen economy are among the leading mitigation options. This course provides a broad introduction to global warming and an overview of various intervention strategies. Various carbon capture and concentration technologies and sequestration options are discussed in detail. The challenges and opportunities of CO2 utilization for chemicals production are addressed. Renewable and low CO2 emission alternative energy technology options will be discussed, particularly the hydrogen economy. A brief overview of the development of green hydrogen related technologies will be covered, including production, storage and transportation, hydrogen use in industry, and hydrogen as a fuel. General technological and engineering challenges ahead for establishing a hydrogen economy will be discussed. In addition, opinions and perspectives on the future transition to a hydrogen economy will also be introduced.
