Geotechnical Engineering (Competence)

'This is an introductory course in slope stability andearth retaining structures. The topics coveredinclude slopes and embankments, earth pressureand retaining structures, and basic deepexcavations. Students will learn how to checkultimate limit states using limit equilibriummethods and appreciate that such checks arenecessary but not sufficient (serviceability to bediscussed in advanced courses). The goal is toteach an assessment of force and/or momentequilibrium for slopes, calculation of active andpassive earth pressures, and appreciation ofvarious important design considerations pertainingto earth retaining structures and basic deepexcavations.'
