Placemaking for City Spaces

YU JIAN, SAMUEL TAN

This course focuses on three select placemaking strategies/processes occurring in three specific urban and suburban spaces. They include: (a) creative placemaking in arts, cultural and creative precincts; (b) tourism placemaking in tourist attractions and leisure sites; and (c) tactical placemaking in a variety of urban contexts. The course covers both academic/conceptual insights along with practical case studies of Asian and Western cities, ensuring that participants have a comprehensive understanding of the processes, prospects and challenges in urban placemaking. At the end of the course, participants will gain: • conceptual and theoretical understanding of different forms of urban placemaking, specifically 'creative', 'tourism' and 'tactical' placemaking; • empirical insights on Asian and Western cities, with a specific focus on the successes and challenges encountered in different urban and cultural contexts; and • practical tips, lessons and takeaways that can help activate placemaking initiatives on the ground.
